Favorite Weaving Books!

I have been experimenting with numerous types of looms and processes. Below, please find some of my favorite books that I use regularly.

  • Alderman, Sharon. (2004)Mastering Weave Structures. Transforming Ideas into Great Cloth. Interweave Press.

    • This book has large color photos of projects, detailed instructions and great range to choose from.

  • Collingwood, Peter. (1991) Rug Weaving Techniques: Beyond the Basics. Interweave Press.

    • It was this book that I FINALLY figured out how to read Peter’s patterns.

  • Collingwood, Peter. (1968) The Techniques of Rug Weaving. Whitstable Litho Ltd.

    • This is basically the “Bible” for rug weaving that is available today.

  • Dixon, Anne. (2007) the Handweaver’s Pattern Directory. Over 600 Weaves for four-shaft Looms. Interweave Press, Inc.

    • This book has incredibly color photographs of the front (and BACK!) of patterns. What a joy this is to get lost in.

  • Mezof, Rebecca. The Art of Tapestry Weaving: A Complete Guide to Mastering the Techniques for Making Images with Yarn. Storey Publishing, LLC.

    • This is such an incredible book if you are interested in creating developed tapestries. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

  • Mitchell, Syne. (2015) Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom: Discover the Full Potential of the Rigid-Heddle Loom, for Beginners and Beyond.

    • This was one of the first weaving books that I purchased. It is wonderful for new weavers who have a Rigid Heddle Loom.

  • Porter Davison, Marguerite. (1994) “The Green Book” A Handweaver’s Pattern Book. Spencer Graphics, Inc.

    • The Green Book has the best examples of patterns with large imagery. The other versions will give you many patterns, but the original one has more. Search these out at yard sales, thrift stores, etc. These can range around $100 if someone knows what they have.

  • Strikler, Carol. (1991) A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns: From the Friends of Handwoven. Interweave Press, Inc.

    • This books is one that I use for my Handwoven Towels. These are what I use my AVL Loom for.

  • Van de Hoogt, Madelyn (1993) The Complete Book of Drafting for Handweavers. ShuttleCraftBoos & Glimakra USA.

    • If you wonder how patterns are created, this book really helps to break down the structure of how they are made.
